97-Year old Billy Graham |
The world-renowned preacher has shared this revelation in one of his recent posts on his website Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. According to Graham, the single biggest mistake for Christians would be to rely on their good works alone or to think that they're good enough for heaven because of their good deeds.
He laments the fact that many Christians think that their good acts can erase their wrongdoings and that this gives them the false idea that they're already worthy to be in God's presence. Graham cites Habakkuk 1:13: "Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing." He teaches that human beings can never be good enough for God because of God's perfection and holiness. A single sin alone would already make humans unholy and merit eternal banishment which is why Christians cannot rely on themselves alone.
This is where Jesus comes in. Graham emphasizes that it is only through him that Christians should rely on. What Christians can't achieve for themselves, Jesus can. He's already done it for everyone when he died on the cross. All that's left is to have a close relationship with him. Graham says about Jesus, "He took upon Himself the judgment and Hell that we deserve. He died in our place."
"Don't trust in yourself or your own goodness for your salvation. Instead, commit your life to Jesus Christ and put your faith and trust in Him. Then you will know that someday you will go to be with Him in Heaven forever— not because of your goodness, but because of His," he concludes.
